Lyrics

1843

In 1843 on a stinking ship in a foreign sea
A raging' storm broke us in two
Killed the captain most of all the crew
All that's left is me and one lost souls for company
The sea spray masks the tears of pain I cry
I feel so tired I'm almost ready to die

CHORUS: how long can a body survive can my will stay strong
How long, how long
How long if I call to you, will you rescue me
How long, how long

For three long days and lonely nights
We held onto our lives with fright
At the mercy of a cruel sea
Has god my maker forgot me
Then through the rain, I thought I saw
Steps of light to heaven's lure
My head spun round I close my eyes again
I feel so tired I'm almost ready to
die

CHORUS
Just when I thought he'd answered me
My body and soul in purgatory
No angels call to welcome me
Just the cold and damp reality
For one lost soul fate was kind
When he searched for peace, they let him die
No easy way for me, I'm alive
Still looking for a reason to survive

CHORUS

ONE LIGHT MOONLIGH
In one light moonlight
You held that magic stir
It was a cold night
We held tight
Onto the innocence we bear
An innocence that is still there

So it's goodbye dare we lie
About the way it feels
Such a polite kiss
Hit and miss
What does it really mean?
One day we may come clean

CHORUS: And sometimes we will wonder
What really happens in between?
And what might be the next time we meet
Will be read between re-opened lines
On a pedestal
I thought I'd place
Your name in vain

Now it's a bitter blow not the final show
So how far down the line?
It's a weak cause
A sad applause
The final web has been spun
When at last will it be fun?

In a sad haze your distant gaze
Your sentiment's out of view
To be blown away
On this all conquering day
It's so hard to understand
How fate has dealt us this hand.

OUR YESTERDAYS (Poem)
UVF and IRA
Said that we would have our say
Beidermeinoff and BNP
Told us once that we'd be free
As I have grown, they came in line
And who is asking a waste of time
I see faces of angry men
While woman fights for what she can

Once you join you can't go back
Sentiment is a backtrack
Idealistic points of view
Purity, no Arian true
Vietnam had focussed thought
We realise that we'd been bought
Isolation deprives the brain
Of human touch betrayed insane

Those who die for their last cause
Receive my thanks no weak applause
They lost their dreams to a greater plan
Peace to every woman and man
The fear in wiser people it stays
For they know what happened in our yesterdays

BEFORE THE RAIN

Sometimes before the rain
Broken, their songs they change
To let it go…let go

Sometimes before the rain
The unfrozen heartbeat melts the pain
Let it show…let show

CHORUS: ay ay ay ay ay x 2

And sometimes before the rain
Turn the picture and throw away the flame
And let it flow…let flow
It wasn't for the man
Who sees you falling down
Gotta make a little time
Throw your pillow to the ground

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL

Pouring down, pouring down x 5
Pour it down, pour it down x 3
And the waves, wash over me
I cannot breathe
Please leave

FUMBLIN' LOVE

They fell on one another, post-romantic night of bliss
Strange reciprocated lovers, had to focus hard to kiss
Led by beer and whiskey, red wine fish and chips
Conversations slightly risky, freed tongues and loose lips

Oo see them stagger down the coastal road
More courageous than afraid
Loose limbs legless like an octopus
So oblivious to shame
You can picture the scene
It kinda sickly surreal
Choose your own words to describe

CHORUS: Hey do hey da di da di da x 4

On deciding to find their way home
Avoiding all the Friday fights
But all the late night buses had long gone
Empty taxis nowhere in sight
She was beaming and radiant
He was getting slightly disobedient
She flowed at five point five percent
He was only vaguely coherent

Clinging to each other as they crossed the sands
Racing towards the sea
With the finesse of a couple of Orangotangs
They fell into a heap
So, picture the scene
Somewhat sickly surreal
Choose your own words to describe

CHORUS X 8

They wrestled and waltzed for a little while
Eventually they kissed
(Got up) and stumbled along and they sang a song
And it went like this…Hey do etc

OPEN CITY

Somewhere out there
In the open city
There's a freedom, a spirit
There's hope in the air

For to fall away
Feel the pain of freedom
The journey, hunger, for a purpose
A sense of worth

CHORUS: Holding on, holed in
When the pain is gone
It's hard to carry on
Holding on, holdin'
Hold me in, take me there

Will climb up high
Gaze down at the streetlights
From a distance
Feel the warmth
Within the solitary sound

Don't treat me
Like a piece of litter
I deserve much better
From this failing pseudo world

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL

And you take me down train x 3
And you keep me down
You won't keep me down x 2

PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE

You're my prisoner of conscience
My universal friend
You never ask for answers
To the questions I defend
You take my piece
When you cut the cake
The lions share is yours to own
And breaking down the barriers
My innocence is outgrown
My innocence is outgrown.

How do I know you are with me
When alone I'm left to rot
Letters disappear with time
The body never touched forgot
Reflections of self denial
Bring sympathy within
Self Abuse is noble
But the patience wearing thin.

You're my prisoner of conscience
The jailer of my thought
Door is locked
The key removed
Rivers of light are damned
By these walls
These walls
Rivers of light
Damn these walls
Rivers of light
Damn these walls.

CHRISTMAS MORNING

It was Christmas morning and the penny dropped
Work was over and my wages stopped
Down in the gutter a man lay still
His wife took a bitter pill
She smiled but she was ill

The paramedics with their sirens on
Festive occasion for them no fun
Up in the boardroom the glasses clinked
This time we're down the sink
Survival I don't think

CHORUS: You're asking me questions on a form
that begs for lies
The answers I give you will despise
I'm living my life on the money that you provide
A legacy you wish to hide

Hospital beds empty signs to let
If you want to operate place roulette bet
Back to basics was the PM's call
Plastic bags, handcuffs his fall
Amilnitrate for the boys in Whitehall

Mental institutions now decentralised
Covered up with your budget lies
People once secured are now exposed
In cells designed to open and close
Fool the public they'll never know

CHORUS: I'm living my life etc

BATTLEFIELD
Please believe me when I say
I did not mean
To hurt you in any way

I will remember when I leave
In the beginning
You did not always receive

Holding on to you is hard
It's not the same
It's me to blame.

CHORUS
So hold me closely
It's a battlefield away
So hold me closely
It's a battlefield away

Take tomorrow as a new day
Let the lover
In us the final say

Release the anger don't hide the pain
You know forgiveness
Is in everyone I'm told

Holding on to you is hard
It's not the same
It's me to blame.

CHORUS

So hold me closely
It's a battlefield away
So hold me closely
It's a battlefield away

MANS INHUMANITY (TO MAN)

We went to Universities
Colleges of dreams
We wore our Doctor Martins
And studied freedom themes

Surrendered our homeland
Forgotten what we'd dreamed
We wait until the final hour
To try and act so clean

CHORUS

We poisoned all our rivers
Disinfected all the land
And now we think politically
We're playing in a one-man band
We killed our freedom fighters
Who fought to free the land
We want peace solutions
But won't give any ground

And now we think we know
How to live with one and all
But we are just one step toward
The final curtain call

CHORUS

HOLD ME NOW

Please open the door and let me in
Wish only soft words to be spoken
Don't know how it's to end?
Or how to being?
Promises before have been broken
It's hard to forget
Much pain to forgive
The heart beats too deep to see
Writing lines in the cold
How do we live?
Waters running free
Do we move over now? Leave it all behind?

CHORUS: This ain't the way; this ain't the way so hold me now

When I'm holding your arm, don't feel the same
Mystery's past, denied
So buried below
You can't stop the tide
From sorrow, strength will rise
Are we falling way? Do we set a day?
Uncarve the hard-set word
In this failing abyss
The final kiss?
Unfold the day
Do we move over now? Leave it all behind?

CHORUS x 8

The sunshine still falls on the same
Empty barrels will flood with the rains
All's sacred, but nothing remains
(Bring) change

FAIL AWAY

Within the dark
Beneath a breaking dawn
(Or) it's the clam
After a raging storm
Don't cling to all the hopes unclear
That follows fear

Come keep on reaching out
When all feels gone
Many secrets
They are left undone
Push and push and pull
Uncertainty away

CHORUS: And don't be afraid of the falling
Fail away
Fail away x 2

The brave they take
The road unknown
Find the wisdom
From the pain outgrown
Chase beyond the old frontiers
Lost shallow years

It's dutiful to save your dreams
Challenge all that
You are led to believe
Cradle courage in yourself
Your truth will show the way

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL

CHORUS

PASSION RAGING

It's not a passion raging
Or an all-consuming flame
It's just a quiet warming feel of love
I'm not playing any game

And I can't win
Not knowing where love begins
And friendship ends
And friendship ends

I'm content with where I stand
No joke - I'm really feeling fine
Don't worry about my affairs
Experience needs time

CHORUS

A man needs strength, a woman beauty
To draw in a crowd
A child gives love with open arms
No questions asked aloud

I WANT TO HOLD YOU

There is no fear I can show you
That cannot be dismissed by your smile
To open the secrets inside me
Stay with me for a while

CHORUS

I want to hold you
Here in my arms
Want to lay next to you now
In touch with your charms
Respond to your movements
Announce my desires

And you know that if you
Close your eyes
Now you may find
The piece of mind
You take the time
To feel the me in you

Sometimes when I talk it is formal
Announcing the time of day
Expecting and understanding
Of hidden feelings inside me that say

CHORUS

Sometimes when the grass is greener
It is viewed from the other side
Then you find that those who were for you
Have been left so far behind

CHORUS

If I GAVE MY LOVE
If I gave my love like I said I ought to
If I saved your life through the gifts I bought you
This day is over hard times have flown
As night grows older, this light now fades
Next to the dreams you laid before me

So I went back
Over things you said that hurt you
I collected the times
I forgot to hold you
In absence the heart grow older
Like a frost that catches the cold
And fondness it freezes over
On waters to behold
I feel sold

CHORUS
Now I'm so numb from wasting
These tears upon a face clown
And in my desperation
I am drowning slowly face down
And if I ever see you
With someone who so becomes you
Then I will move on gently
To a new world
That is light
To me
Then I disappeared into my fun expressions
In mirrors sometimes hid the common expectation
From every corner
I want to be heard
Touched with a soft sensation
Be seen, direct
That has appeal, such respect
Before you

CHORUS

MUCH LIGHTER NOW

Hello, I didn't catch your name No?
Oh so sorry you didn't make the grade
Time to find your own train
Shedding skin
It's so nice to be free again
There's no more milk left

CHORUS

It's much lighter now
Hey, don't hurry home
Oo much lighter now
Don't hurry now
You see
I'm no longer
Your kangaroo
You better find yourself
Another canoe
Cos it's much much lighter now

Excuse me
A little longer
I'll go and suffer some more
You see
I'm stretching to reach
The stars
Are you're happy
Just to touch
The floor?
Did I quench your thirst?
Promise not to tread
On your plateaux
Don't forget to wipe your feet
On the way out

CHORUS

PLEASURE ISLAND

Want to be followed by your shadow in the mist
Go travelling way beyond the final twist
Where every little inch of you has been slowly kissed
Even nature'll find it so hard to resist

On some remote pleasure island, castaways
Don't hold on to the day
Unload away

CHORUS: And hey, take me away, and away

Gonna sweep you off your feet swallow you whole
Take you down invite you deep into my soul
Re-ignite the flames the demons stole
Where the passions dance and flow out of control

On some remote pleasure island, castaways
Don't hold onto the day
Unload away

COMING HOME

Oh, I know it. I can taste it
Wanna show it, don't wanna waste it
Been through the wars
So close to the bone
So good to know, I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home

Such a feeling', It's getting lighter
Everything now, is getting brighter
Been apart from this world
Sat it out alone
So good to know, I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home

CHORUS: Mmm sure feels like the first time
This time gonna take it all the way
I'm over the worst time
So follow what you feel
Only swallow what is wholesome and real!

It's the time for a celebration
So much jubilation
I'm seeing it so clear
So bring it all on
So good to know, I'm comin' home
I'm comin' home

CHORUS

THE PROVENCE

In the Provence, Le Cigale
Beats its wing with an urgency in sound
Across a table I look, but you're not here
Where are you today?
Which Island of dreams
Riding your hopes, but fearing
That this time, this time
It is not yours

A sentiment, so inspired
Written in total innocence
Searching my early years
What will you find?
For all of my life I have waited for
The softness of sand to appear
But the hardness of stone
Remains to impress the soul

In moving on
We have to turn
Our backs on those
Who helped us
It's unreasonable to expect
The newness of love
To understand
The familiar they breed contempt
Although the scent of closeness
On occasions is so high
It frees the mind.

In the Provence
As a friend you stole my heart
And thinking of us
As lovers we are so very far
Apart

BEEN A LONG TIME

It's been a long time
A long time coming
You chose the easy way out
You took to running

Never stopping to look behind
Or think what you were doing
You left a mountain of broken dreams
A trail of pain and ruin

CHORUS
But you never take a moment
Try to wonder why
Don't you ever think
To starting a new day
Stripped me of my trust and pride
You took it
And threw it all
Away

It was a long time
Long time in the making
Such a strong and special love
So easy in the breaking

Gave you my heart my inner soul
Laid it bare upon your say
The clothes you left are torn
All my tears are dry
Your letters
Now close
The final day

CHORUS

GENTLY SCREAMING

Young men will always break your heart
Cheap talk is always free
They will break you on a journey
Maybe they can only see
It's the first time I've ever drawn you
From a picture with open mind

CHORUS: And I'm gently screaming
Where are you now
Pass the bottle pass the time
Please turn my water into wine
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
Nothing spent will bring no change
It's the first time I've ever realised
How much space for you is in my mind

CHORUS

I realised I understood
It is too late to make it good
The waiting game, the one to blame
The only one to lose their name
It's the first time I've ever wondered
What it would be like to have you free

CHORUS
INSTRUMENTAL
